Hadith 4 – Guarding the Tongue

 إِنَّ الْعَبْدَ لَيَتَكَلَّمُ بِالْكَلِمَةِ مَا يَتَبَيَّنُ فِيهَا، يَزِلُّ بِهَا فِي النَّارِ أَبْعَدَ مِمَّا بَيْنَ الْمَشْرِقِ وَ الْمَغْرِبِ

A slave [of Allah] may utter a word without giving it much thought by which he slips into the fire a distance further than that between east and west.

(Bukhari and Muslim)

Explanation:

The tongue is a great blessing of Allah and despite its small size, it could be the cause of a person’s bliss or doom in the afterlife. Therefore, it is very important for a Muslim to safeguard his/her tongue from lying, backbiting, slandering, cursing, and a host of other sins that emanate from this single organ. In fact, some words are so dangerous that they can throw a person outside the fold of Islam.

The Prophet (ﷺ) in this hadith is teaching us about the effects of words and their consequences. A person could utter a word or statement thinking nothing of it, and may even consider it insignificant, however, in the sight of Allah it may be highly detested, which causes the person to fall into the depths of hellfire. The opposite could also occur. A person may utter a word or statement and not give it much attention, however, in the sight of Allah it may be highly loved, which causes the person to be raised several levels in paradise.

The important lesson from this wonderful hadith is that we must think before we speak. As the Prophet (ﷺ) directed us in another hadith to either say something good or remain silent. Some of the scholars mention that before uttering a word, the person is its master but as soon it leaves the tongue, then the person becomes its prisoner. It is important to ponder over the consequences of one’s words before speaking and the harms they may cause to oneself and othe.

زبان کی حفاظت یا زبان کا نگہبان رہنا ایک اہم اخلاقی اصول ہے جو ہر مذہب اور تعلقات میں اہمیت رکھتا ہے۔ اسلام میں بھی زبان کی حفاظت کو بڑھانے کا خصوصی ذکر ہے اور قرآن مجید میں اس پر بہت سی آیات ملتی ہیں جو زبان کی ہنرمندی اور اخلاقی استعمال کی ضرورت کو بیان کرتی ہیں۔

زبان کی حفاظت کا مطلب ہے کہ انسان کو چاہئے کہ اپنی زبان کو محفوظ رکھے اور بے ضرورت چغل کرنے سے بچے۔ یہ ہنر ہے کہ زبان کو صحیح مقدار میں استعمال کریں اور اپنے الفاظ کو اچھے اور مثبت طریقے سے رکھیں۔

اسلام میں زبان کی حفاظت کا تعلیمات بہت واضح ہیں۔ حضرت محمد صلی اللہ علیہ و آلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: "جو شخص مجھ سے ایمان لاتا ہے، اور اللہ کے بعد مجھ پر یقین رکھتا ہے، اسے چاہئے کہ اپنی زبان کو بچائے۔" (صحیح البخاری)

زبان کی حفاظت کا ایک اہم حصہ ہے غیبت سے بچائے رہنا۔ غیبت ایک منفی عمل ہے جو دوسرے افراد کی بے ہوشی میں ان کے بارے میں براہ راست یا ضمنی باتیں کہنا ہوتا ہے۔ اسلام میں غیبت کرنا ایمان کی قوت کو کم کرتا ہے اور ایک شخص کی عزت و احترام کو متاثر کرتا ہے۔

زبان کی حفاظت کرنے کے لئے، شخص کو اپنے الفاظ کو دقت سے چننا چاہئے۔ غیرت اور اچھے اخلاقی اصولات کے تحت، زبان کا استعمال صرف اچھے اور مثبت اثرات چھوڑے گا۔

زبان کی حفاظت ایک شخص کی شخصیت میں بڑھاوٹ لانے والا عنصر ہوتی ہے اور یہ معاشرتی روابط میں بھی بڑی اہمیت رکھتی ہے۔ یہ ایک شخص کو اچھے دوستوں اور معاشرتی ہم آہنگی کی راہ میں مدد فراہم کرتی ہے۔
